Former All Black Adam Thomson, who has spent the past week in hospital in Tokyo unable to walk, has been diagnosed a painful infection of the spine.

The 35-year-old who played 29 tests for the All Blacks, was rushed to hospital in the middle of the night and admits it will be a lengthy recovery process.

He was in so much pain in the lower back he could not walk.

On social media he said "it's been a tough week full of unexpected challenges. It's going to be a long road to get back on my feet but I' up for it..."

He hasn't lost his sense of humour though "it was touch and go for awhile there and we almost had to amputate but to the credit of this crack Japanese medical team they were able to save the moustache."
