Foley implores the ARU to not sacrifice a Super Rugby franchise
Wallabies fly half Bernard Foley.

Wallabies fly half Bernard Foley has implored the ARU to not sacrifice a Super Rugby franchise as the prospect of Australia losing a team has re‑emerged before a decisive SANZAAR meeting next month.

The heads of Australian, New Zealand, South African and Argentinian rugby will convene on the 9th of next month to finalise changes to Super Rugby for next year, after criticism of the 2016 competition prompted an urgent strategic review.

Alternatives to the confusing four‑conference, 18‑team competition included a return to 15 teams, via Australia dropping one team and South Africa cutting two.

Other models involved keeping 18 teams but changing Super Rugby’s format.

Melbourne Rebels are safe given they are privately owned and while the continued financial woes of the Brumbies has had some in Canberra nervous.

The Western Force have improved their standing after a strong off‑season.
