Wallabies fullback Israel Folau has claimed a record third John Eales Medal, edging out Kurtley Beale for the top gong in Australian rugby.
Before Thursday evening’s awards ceremony at Randwick Racecourse, Michael Hooper, Nathan Sharpe, George Smith and Folau had all won the prestigious award twice but the 28‑year‑old try‑scoring sensation has claimed his third medal in five years in professional rugby.
Folau finished with 260 votes from his Wallabies teammates, who all vote on a 3‑2‑1 basis at the conclusion of each Test.
The voting period began with the Wallabies’ first Test of the spring tour last year against Wales in Cardiff and concluded on the weekend with Australia’s upset 23‑18 victory over the All Blacks.
