The Fiji Amateur Boxing Association has sent 2018 Commonwealth Games boxers, Winston Hill and Jone Koroilagilagi and former Junior Development Boxer Nathan Singh to Sydney to train under Johnny Lewis who is a six‑time World Championship trainer and Australian Hall of Famer.
Lewis, who is the coach for Sydney University Boxing Club, attended the Fiji Games in April to watch and assess boxers who were vying for selection to the 2019 Pacific Games. After returning to Australia, he sent an invitation to these elite boxers to be part of a one‑month intensive training program. This program will see these young men undergo intensive physical and mental training to build their confidence and exposure in a foreign environment to help with their preparations for the Pacific Games in Samoa.
Fiji Amateur Boxing Association says these boxers will be accessing daily sparring sessions with quality boxers as well as participating in weekly bouts with some of the best fighters in Australia adding to ensure their health and safety during the one month program, these boxers have undergone medical clearance and have been released by Fiji Amateur Boxing Association and cleared by Boxing Australia and Boxing NSW to compete in local tournaments and four Australian tournaments.
Fiji Amateur Boxing Association National Coach, Nicholas Fuata, is confident that these young boxers will use this training platform as leverage before going to the Pacific Games.
