Fiji Women’s Cricket shines with fifth-place finish at first-ever qualifier

The Fiji women’s cricket team has achieved a milestone, finishing fifth out of eight teams at the first women’s qualifier ever hosted in the country, a strong showing after entering the tournament ranked seventh.

Cricket Fiji CEO, Sitiveni Rokoro says the side also celebrated a notable victory over higher-ranked Samoa, marking a testament to the growth of women’s and girls’ cricket in Fiji.

Rokoro further says while men’s qualifiers in Fiji date back to 2018 with just three or four teams, this year’s women’s event saw eight nations competing, a sign of the sport’s steady expansion.

He adds that the Fiji women’s team, made up almost entirely of local talent with just two overseas-based players joining late, impressed with their performance and resilience.

The CEO continues that the result demonstrates the potential of local athletes and provides a platform for bigger and better things to come.

Rokoro outlines its next major goal, securing a full-time cricket facility in Fiji to provide consistent training opportunities and create a pathway towards full-time professional players.

Rokoro says this investment will be key to raising Fiji’s profile on the international stage and ensuring continued growth for women’s cricket.
