Cashmore stars as brilliant Bay of Plenty see off Tasman 27-7 in NPC quarterfinal

Lucas Cashmore’s brilliance inspired two outstanding Bay of Plenty tries to see off Tasman in Saturday’s NPC quarterfinal in Tauranga.

The Steamers No 10 created excellent second-half scores for wingers Kele Lasaqa and Fehi Fineanganofo as last year’s runners-up pulled clear of the Mako to win 27-7.

He first flicked a no-look pass for Lasaqa to sprint away, then ignited an attack from their 22 when slick hands set Fineanganofo loose.

Cashmore was also immaculate off the kicking tee.

The Steamers, seeking their first NPC title since 1976, fought back from a 7-6 deficit at halftime.

Flying winger Kyren Taumoefolau chased down David Havili’s kick for a superb finish to reward the Mako’s attacking intent.

However, the hosts were dominant after the break and Tasman’s hopes vanished when Bay of Plenty forced a penalty try after No 10 William Havili was sinbinned for a cynical play.

The Steamers shut out Tasman and were more ferocious in winning contests around the ruck.

They will learn their semifinal opponent when the quarterfinals are concluded on Sunday.
