Super Rugby defending champions Hurricanes put on a master class at Prince Chichibu Stadium in Tokyo. The Sunwolves could not cope with the precision, pace and physicality of the visitors who scored 13 tries to win 83‑17.
The defending champions were full value for their win as the Sunwolves had no answer to their power and strength and the men from Wellington eventually outscored their hosts by 13 tries to three.
The Waratahs were made to work hard before claiming a 19‑13 victory over the Western Force in their Super Rugby opener in Sydney.
In a tightly contested affair, both sides crossed for a try apiece although on the balance of play the hosts deserve this result as they took control of proceedings as the game progressed while the Force went off the boil particularly during the second half.
The Crusaders made a winning start to their Super Rugby campaign when they claimed a hard‑fought 17‑13 triumph over the Brumbies in Christchurch.
The home side dominated for large periods and should have won this match by a bigger margin, but the Brumbies delivered a competitive effort.
In other matches, the Lions defeated the Cheetahs 28-25, Jaguares beat the Kings 39-26 while the Stormers defeated the Bulls 37-24.
