Another injury worry for All Blacks as Tavatavanawai forced off after 20 minutes of NPC match

The All Blacks have been dealt a fresh blow with Timoci Tavatavanawai lasting just 20 minutes in his NPC appearance for Tasman.

The Fijian-born wrecking ball was released to play for the Mako in their emotional round five encounter against Otago yesterday, but he was forced off early with a potential injury midway through the first half, replaced by Cooper Grant.

It’s another unwanted headache for coach Scott Robertson ahead of the much-anticipated showdown against the Springboks at Eden Park next weekend.

Tavatavanawai was paired with returning All Black Leicester Fainga’anuku in an explosive Tasman midfield, but his involvement was limited during the opening quarter.

It was unclear what exactly happened to Tavatavanawai as he quietly walked off the field during a stoppage in play, though his right forearm was heavily strapped.

The Highlanders co-captain made his All Blacks debut during the second of three tests against France in July after earning a maiden call-up, but was not used in the opening two rounds of the Rugby Championship.

The All Blacks split their first two matches, beating Argentina 41-24 in the tournament opener before losing the rematch 29-23 last weekend.

Tasman overcame the loss of their All Blacks star to snatch a dramatic 31-27 win after replacement hooker Tomasi Maka scored a try on full-time.

Mako captain David Havili dedicated the victory to Tasman legend Shane Christie, who died aged 39 on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the All Blacks will host the Springboks at 7.05pm Saturday at Eden Park.
