Residents of Rakiraki and the wider Ra Province will no longer have to travel to Nadi or Suva to access immigration services following the opening of the new Rakiraki Immigration Office.
Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto says the new office will make it easier for people to access essential government services closer to their homes, reducing travel time and costs.
Speaking during the opening, Naupoto says development is not only about buildings, roads and infrastructure, but also about improving people's lives, creating opportunities and ensuring communities have access to the services they need.
He says the new office will serve people living in Rakiraki and surrounding areas, including Tavua, Vatukoula, Wainibuka, Nakorotubu and Saivou.
Naupoto says the office will provide passport applications and renewals, citizenship services, permits and visa services.
He says the new system became operational on Wednesday, and the first four applicants received their passports today.
The Minister says the opening follows the establishment of the Nakasi Immigration Office, with plans underway to open additional offices in Nabouwalu in Vanua Levu and Sigatoka.
Meanwhile, Naupoto has reminded immigration officers of the importance of maintaining high compliance standards to protect Fiji's borders while treating members of the public with respect and understanding.
He has urged officers to treat every person with courtesy, listen to their concerns and provide clear guidance.
Naupoto says the government's aim is to ensure that people in rural communities can access essential services without having to travel long distances.
