As many communities in Fiji are already experiencing the impacts of El Niño, including reduced water availability and water shortages, the National Disaster Risk Management Office is urging communities to prepare early, warning that Government assistance may take time to reach some areas, particularly remote and maritime communities.
The NDRMO says people should not wait until their water supplies run out before taking action.
Communities are encouraged to identify available water sources, store safe drinking water where possible and use water wisely to ensure supplies last longer.
Households are also urged to plan for possible water disruptions, identify safe alternative water sources and follow official advice on treating water before drinking it.
The NDRMO is encouraging communities to work together to manage shared water supplies and support households that may face difficulties accessing water.
It says early preparation can help reduce the impact of water shortages as dry conditions continue across Fiji.
People are advised to follow updates and guidance from the Water Authority of Fiji, Fiji Meteorological and Hydrological Services and the NDRMO.
