Drug accused Zoe Maharaj Moore has been handed a $1,000 fine for breaching bail conditions in 2019 while she was awaiting trial in an earlier drug-related case.
She breached her bail conditions by failing to report to Raiwaqa Police Station on four occasions between September 2019 and January 2020.
While sentencing Moore, Suva Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne says although her guilty plea was entered at a relatively late stage of the proceedings, it nevertheless spared the court and the parties the time and expense associated with a contested hearing.
While noting that the matter has been pending in court for nearly six years, her previous good character and guilty plea, which resulted in a saving of time and resources, Magistrate Somaratne says he is satisfied that a fine is the appropriate sentence in this case.
He adds she will have to serve 100 days' imprisonment if she fails to pay the fine.
