Breaking her personal best is the main goal for Fiji sprinter Heleina Young as she prepares to make her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow.

The 26-year-old from Nakaseleka in Kadavu recently equalled her 100 metres personal best at the Oceania Championships and is determined to go one step further at the Games.

Speaking to fijivillage Sports, Young says training has been the toughest it has ever been, but having a supportive group of athletes has helped everyone push through the demanding sessions.

She says the team constantly encourages one another, making the preparation more enjoyable.

Although this will be her first Commonwealth Games, Young has previously represented Fiji at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

She says competing against world-class athletes will be a big challenge, but believes racing against the best will bring out the best in her.

Young will compete in the women's 100 metres and 200 metres.

She also paid tribute to her training partner, Erol Qaqa, saying his positive attitude, work ethic and energy during training continue to inspire and motivate her, especially on the toughest days.

Young says she is taking her preparation one training session at a time while remaining focused on achieving a new personal best in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games will kick off this Friday and end on the 2nd of August.

The women's 100 metres event is scheduled for Monday, 27th July, from 10am to 1pm, while the women's 200 metres will be held on Wednesday, 29th July, also from 10am to 1pm.
