Bulou Auki Vunakece of Yat Sen Secondary School delivered a remarkable performance at the Coca-Cola Games, clinching gold in the Girls Sub-Junior Long Jump while also setting a new record, despite suffering a broken arm during the competition.
Vunakece soared to a winning distance of 5.21 metres, surpassing the previous record of 5.08 metres set in 2016 by Mereseini Waqatoki of Suva Grammar School.
Vunakece's achievement was made even more extraordinary after she broke her arm in one of her attempts, but continued to compete.
She says she is grateful to her coaches for believing in her, as she feels good, even with the injury.
Overcome with emotion after her victory, Vunakece says her tears reflect the magnitude of the moment.
She cheekily says her tears are from winning the gold medal, breaking the record and also from breaking her arm.
Meanwhile, Fane Maopa of Adi Maopa College secured silver with a jump of 4.81 metres, while Suva Grammar School’s Bulou Karalaini Naituivau claimed bronze with a leap of 4.43 metres.
