Woman to stand trial next year on human trafficking charge

A woman charged with one count of trafficking in persons will stand trial in the Lautoka High Court from 22nd to 26th March next year.

It is alleged that Torika Tabua was offered a job through Facebook, which she declined, before referring the opportunity to the alleged victim and helping her travel from Fiji to Egypt for employment as a babysitter, while allegedly being reckless as to whether the victim would be exploited.

The case came to light when the victim fled Egypt and returned to Fiji.

The alleged offence is said to have occurred between 1st January and 17th June 2022 in Nadi.

Tabua has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that the pre-trial conference documents had been filed and served.

The matter has been adjourned to 15th October for a pre-trial hearing, and Tabua's bail has been extended.
