Waqanika's FICAC case to continue after court refuses stay application

Waqanika's FICAC case to continue after court refuses stay application
The FICAC case against Suva lawyer Tanya Waqanika will continue as her stay application has been refused by Suva High Court Judge Justice Siainiu Bull.

Waqanika, through her counsel Barbara Malimali filed the stay application challenging the appointment of Lavi Rokoika as Acting FICAC Commissioner.

Justice Bull ruled that a stay application is not a proper forum to challenge the appointment.

Waqanika is charged by FICAC for allegedly breaching Section 14 of the Political Parties Act.

The charge is brought under Section 14(7) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.

It is alleged that on or about 19 April 2024, while serving as a public officer, namely a Board Member of Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited, Waqanika publicly indicated opposition to the political party SODELPA.

The matter in the Magistrates Court has been adjourned to May 27th for a pre-trial conference.
