Wailea residents begin cleanup after overnight flooding, raise long-standing drainage concerns
Jairaj, a resident of Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa

Residents of Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa are spending their morning cleaning up after heavy rain last night caused widespread flooding throughout the community.

Speaking to fijivillage News, resident Jairaj says the main cause of the flooding was a blocked drain that failed to cope with the volume of water.

He says floodwater entered several homes, forcing families to move quickly to save their belongings.

Jairaj also raised concerns about waste oil from the Central Bus Company yard, which he says washed into their compound and even seeped into their home during the flooding.

According to residents, the issue of the blocked drain is not new, as the community has repeatedly reported the problem to the Suva City Council and to both the previous and current governments, but no action has been taken.

Meanwhile, a few houses in the settlement remain without power this morning as cleanup efforts continue.
