MSAF says the training programme, running from 30th June to 6th July 2026, is equipping participants from the villages of Taunovo, Ekubu, Lomanikaya, and Bouwaqa with the knowledge and practical skills required to obtain their Boat Master Licence and Restricted Master Engineer Class 6 certification.
They say the initiative forms part of the UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji’s Solesolevaki ni Veitaqomaki project, supported by the UK in Fiji, and it underscores the importance of developing a skilled and qualified maritime workforce capable of operating safely and in full compliance with Fiji’s maritime laws.
MSAF says by supporting local operators to become fully certified, MSAF is helping to strengthen a culture of safety across Fiji’s maritime sector.
They say in line with its commitment to inclusive and equitable maritime development, they also facilitated evening training sessions to enable women, who play vital roles in their communities, to participate and achieve the same professional qualifications as their peers.
MSAF says at a time when national attention remains focused on regulatory compliance within the maritime industry, the Vatulele training programme reflects MSAF’s long-term commitment to building safer and more resilient maritime communities.
They stress that through ongoing capacity-building and the consistent enforcement of maritime standards, MSAF remains dedicated to ensuring that every vessel operating in Fiji’s waters meets the high standards of safety that all passengers, families, and communities deserve.
