The University of Fiji has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tuvalu Government’s Ministry of Education, marking a significant step in regional cooperation.

University of Fiji Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem stresses the agreement represents a milestone achievement and highlights new opportunities for collaboration in academic and research areas at national, regional and international levels.

She says the MOU provides for the placement of Tuvaluan students at the University, with at least five spaces to be reserved annually in programmes such as nursing and the Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences, along with other courses offered by the institution.

Professor Shameem says the agreement also focuses on strengthening collaboration in research, policy dialogue and capacity building, particularly in addressing climate change and development challenges faced by Small Island Developing States.

She adds that the MOU will facilitate cultural, academic and institutional exchanges, including participation in educational and community events, while also allowing Tuvalu to utilise the university’s academic platforms to promote key national and global issues.

Meanwhile, Tuvalu’s Minister for Education, Hamoa Holona describes the agreement as a historic step that will support programmes tailored to Tuvalu’s needs.

Holona says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving education and tackling key challenges.

He adds both parties are committed to creating better opportunities for future generations.
