Two people have been wounded following a shooting near the White House today after a suspect allegedly opened fire at US Secret Service agents, according to law enforcement sources.
Sources told CBS News that the suspect and a possible bystander were both taken to hospital following the incident in Washington DC.
The suspect is reportedly in critical condition, while the second individual remains in a serious condition.
The shooting unfolded near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House grounds, prompting a major emergency response and a temporary lockdown of the area.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly fired at Secret Service personnel, who then returned fire.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the FBI was assisting the Secret Service with the investigation and says further updates would be provided as information becomes available.
Dramatic footage shared by ABC News correspondent Selina Wang captured the moment gunfire erupted near the White House North Lawn.
Wang was filming outside the White House when multiple shots rang out, forcing journalists and staff to take cover before they were rushed into the press briefing room.
Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots during the incident as heavily armed Secret Service officers secured the area.
The White House was briefly placed under lockdown while law enforcement agencies responded.
Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
