Pixar Animation Studios’ latest film, Toy Story 5, has received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics ahead of its theatrical release this week.

The fifth instalment in the beloved animated franchise has earned a Certified Fresh rating of 93 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 97 reviews at the time of writing.

The strong reception means every main entry in the Toy Story series has maintained a Fresh rating of at least 90 percent since the original film debuted in 1995.

The first two films in the franchise, Toy Story and Toy Story 2, both hold perfect 100 percent scores, while Toy Story 3 has a 98 percent rating and Toy Story 4 stands at 94 percent.

The latest film follows Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their friends as they face a new challenge in a battle between toys and technology.

The story centres on a new character, Lilypad, whose arrival threatens to make life increasingly difficult for the gang.

Several familiar voices return for the sequel, including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Tony Hale reprises his role as Forky, while Melissa Villaseñor returns as Karen Beverly.

New additions to the cast include Greta Lee as Lilypad and comedian Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants. Craig Robinson and Mykal-Michelle Harris also feature in the voice cast.

The film is written and directed by Andrew Stanton, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker behind Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Stanton has previously contributed to every Toy Story film. Kenna Harris serves as co-director, while Lindsey Collins is the producer.

Toy Story 5 arrives in cinemas this Friday.
