A temporary sewer pipeline aimed at reducing recurring sewer main bursts and service disruptions along Denarau Road is on track to be completed by the end of this month.
The Water Authority of Fiji says the Temporary Sewer Rising Main is being installed to provide immediate and short- to medium-term relief to the wastewater network serving Denarau Island.
WAF says the existing pipeline has experienced recurring bursts and operational failures because of its age and deteriorating condition, resulting in service disruptions and increased maintenance work along Denarau Road.
The temporary pipeline will supplement the existing DN250 Asbestos Cement Sewer Rising Main, which carries wastewater from the Denarau Sewer Pump Station to the Navakai Wastewater Treatment Plant.
They say once commissioned, the temporary pipeline is expected to provide additional wastewater capacity and operational backup, reducing the risk of sewer overflows and further pipeline failures.
Construction is being carried out by China Railway First Group Limited, with WAF advising Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau that work is progressing well and remains on schedule for completion by the end of this month.
Ro Filipe says the project is important for public health, environmental protection and economic development, particularly as Denarau remains one of Fiji’s major tourism hubs.
He says the Government remains committed to strategic infrastructure investments that strengthen the resilience of essential services.
Long-term permanent upgrade solutions for the wastewater network are also being planned and implemented.
