The Taveuni Rugby team is gearing up for a physical battle when it travels to Nausori this weekend to meet Naitasiri in Round 6 of the Skipper Cup Competition.
The team will be drawing strength from the support of the Vanua as it continues its campaign in the competition.
Taveuni is a newcomer to the Skipper Cup and has defied expectations throughout the season.
They narrowly lost 24-23 to defending champions Malolo in Round 1 before going down 28-18 to Navosa in Round 2.
Their first win came in Round 3, when they defeated Ba 27-25, followed by a historic 32-22 victory over Nadroga in Round 4.
Last week, Taveuni went down fighting against Nadi, losing 24-13.
The club says the team is made up largely of farmers from the island, with players having to balance their commitments at home with training, travelling and preparing for competitive rugby.
It says the continued support and blessings of the Vanua remain a major source of strength as the players navigate the demands of a long rugby season.
As the season progresses, the club says supporters on Taveuni and on the mainland have stepped up to ensure the players are well looked after, particularly with meals, rugby equipment and other necessities.
Fans who spoke with fijivillage Sports say their support is driven by their belief in the players and their desire to see Taveuni continue competing strongly in the Skipper Cup.
They say fundraising efforts are ongoing to help provide food and rugby gear for the team.
Supporters also visit the players’ camp to encourage them and show their appreciation for the sacrifices they are making.
The club says support from the Vanua extends beyond financial assistance, with traditional blessings, encouragement and regular camp visits providing additional motivation for the players.
Taveuni will face Naitasiri at 4pm at Ratu Cakobau Park this Saturday.
In other matches, Tailevu will take on Rewa at Nakelo District School Ground, while Nadi faces Navosa at King Charles Park.
In Lautoka, the home side will meet Malolo, while Nadroga takes on Ba at Lawaqa Park.
Kadavu will play Suva in Nasese.
All matches are scheduled for 3pm this Saturday.
