Tavatavanawai is the ultimate leader - Joseph
Highlanders Coach Jamie Joseph says Fijian-born midfielder Timoci Tavatavanawai is in his mind the ultimate leader in terms of how he plays the game.

Joseph, who is still believed to be in the running for the vacant All Blacks head coaching role,  explained Tavatavanawai’s influence on the Highlanders, saying he had a broken arm, a knee operation, missed the preseason, and is not 100 percent fit yet, but he is their leader, and they are really proud of him.

Tavatavanawai made his 50th Super Rugby appearance on Friday evening, where he contributed four offloads and beat eight defenders throughout his 80-minute performance.

To start 2026, they managed to find themselves on the opposite side of the ledger, clinching victory through a late Millar penalty goal to pip the Crusaders 25-23.

The Highlanders will have their work cut out for them this week as they host last year's finalists in the Chiefs at 6.05pm Saturday.

In other games, the Hurricanes play Moana Pasifika at 6.05pm Friday, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will meet the Waratahs at 8.35pm, the Force will face the Blues at 8.35pm Saturday, while the Crusaders play the Brumbies at 2.35pm Sunday.
