Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging far higher than expected, with the Tom Holland and Zendaya-led superhero film delivering a blockbuster opening weekend for Sony Pictures.
The film collected $168 million domestically on Friday from 4,487 North American screens, including Thursday preview screenings.
After earning an A CinemaScore from audiences, Sony is now projecting a $325 million domestic opening weekend, which would rank as the second-highest opening of all time.
However, rival estimates suggest the film could surpass Avengers: Endgame, which opened to $357.1 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
If that happens, Spider-Man: Brand New Day would overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home, which debuted with $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million worldwide in December 2021 before going on to earn $1.9 billion globally.
The latest Spider-Man film, produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, has also set a new record for the biggest opening Friday at the North American box office, earning $168 million and surpassing Avengers: Endgame's previous record of $156.7 million.
It also set a new record for Thursday previews, taking in $72 million, ahead of Endgame's $60 million.
