Spain have ended a 16-year wait for a FIFA World Cup knockout victory after beating Austria 3-0 in Los Angeles to book their place in the Round of 16.
Spain controlled the match from the start and finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute through Mikel Oyarzabal, giving them a 1-0 lead at the break.
The European champions doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Pedro Porro before Oyarzabal sealed the victory in the 89th minute with his fourth goal of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón has set a new FIFA World Cup record for the longest clean sheet by a goalkeeper in World Cup finals matches, going 519 minutes without conceding a goal.
He breaks the previous record of 518 minutes set by Walter Zenga during the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Spain will now face either Portugal or Croatia in the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, in other Round of 32 action, Portugal take on Croatia at 11am, while Switzerland meet Algeria at 3pm.
