The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) says it will continue preparations to contest the next General Election regardless of whether the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 is passed by Parliament.
SODELPA Leader Aseri Radrodro says the party respects Parliament's constitutional responsibilities and the legislative process, but stresses that the proposed constitutional changes should not create unnecessary uncertainty over the election timetable.
Radrodro says the party's readiness to contest the next election is not dependent on the outcome of the Bill.
He says with December 24th, 2026 identified as a critical date in the current electoral timetable, there must be clarity on the constitutional requirements, the issuing of the election writ and arrangements for the next General Election.
The party says the legal implications of this date must be determined in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws.
Radrodro says SODELPA will respect Parliament's decision on the Bill while continuing to prepare its provisional candidates, strengthen its grassroots structures and engage with communities.
He says that constitutional reform must be considered transparently, with proper parliamentary scrutiny and respect for democratic processes.
SODELPA is also calling on the relevant authorities to clearly communicate the next steps following Parliament's decision on the Bill.
The party says its priorities include protecting indigenous rights and interests, improving public services, creating economic opportunities and addressing the rising cost of living.
Radrodro is urging party members, provisional candidates and supporters to remain united, disciplined and focused as preparations continue for the next General Election.
