Defending Fiji Secondary Schools Netball champions Saint Joseph's Secondary School are aiming to retain their Under-19 title at this year's Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Tournament.

The Saint Joseph Under-19 side did not feature in the opening round of competition at the Suva Grammar School grounds yesterday.

Meanwhile, after establishing itself as one of Fiji’s leading academic institutions for more than a decade, Jai Narayan College is now setting its sights on sporting success, with hopes of adding trophies to its achievements.

The school is participating in the Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Tournament for the first time, reflecting its commitment to the holistic development of its students.

School teacher and tournament organiser Master Pio Kerewaqa said that while Jai Narayan College has enjoyed significant academic success over the years, sporting accolades have been largely absent from the school’s trophy cabinet.

Kerewaqa says the school is determined to build on its strong academic reputation by encouraging greater participation in sports, beginning with netball.

He emphasised that sport plays a crucial role in developing students’ character, teaching valuable lessons in teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience that extend beyond the classroom.

According to Kerewaqa, the school’s involvement in the tournament forms part of a broader effort to provide students with a well-rounded education that promotes both academic excellence and physical development.

Through its participation in netball, Jai Narayan College hopes to cultivate a stronger sporting culture and celebrate success both in the classroom and on the court.

In the Under-17 grade, Jai Narayan College put up a strong performance against Saint Joseph Secondary School but went down 18-14.

Elsewhere, in the Under-15 division, Suva Grammar School defeated DAV Girls College 18-7.

In another Under-17 match, Saint Joseph Secondary School overcame Yat Sen Secondary School 16-11.

The Saint Joseph Secondary School Under-19 team did not play yesterday.
