Extra Bula FC midfielder Semi Nabenu returns for the 2027 OFC Professional League season, aiming to build on the experience gained during the club’s inaugural campaign.
Son of former Fiji national footballer Waisea Nabenu, says he enjoyed his first season with the Warriors and wants to continue learning under Head Coach Stéphane Auvray.
He says representing a professional club from his home country is a privilege and an honour.
Nabenu says the team performed well in its first season, finishing third in the regular season before reaching the Top Four playoffs.
He says the experience helped him better understand his strengths and how he can contribute to the team, particularly in central midfield.
Nabenu says he also learned from experienced players, including captain Roy Krishna, Setareki Hughes and Gabriel Matanisiga, who helped him adapt to the professional environment.
He says Krishna has taught him valuable lessons, particularly about looking after his body and the importance of off-field preparation.
Nabenu’s football journey began in New Zealand, where he moved with his family in 2008 after his father received an opportunity to play football there.
He progressed through several clubs, including Otahuhu United, Central United, Bay Olympic and Onehunga Sports, before making his senior debut for Auckland United.
He later played for Birkenhead United and earned an opportunity with Auckland FC’s reserves in 2025.
Looking ahead to next season, Nabenu hopes to continue improving physically and technically, while also making an impact on the scoresheet.
He says the team can build on its first-season performance by having greater confidence and belief in its abilities.
Nabenu has also thanked the Bula Tribe for supporting the team during its inaugural season and is urging fans to continue backing the Warriors in 2027.
The 2027 OFC Pro League will begin in January next year.
