Seaqaqa farmer fears cattle losses as dry conditions worsen

A Seaqaqa farmer fears cattle could begin dying if dry conditions continue for another month, as pasture dries up and water levels in rivers used by farmers continue to fall.

Salove farmer Viren Kumar says recent rain has provided some relief, but it has not been enough to meet the needs of livestock.

Kumar says the water source currently used by farmers has significantly less water than before, while water delivered by trucks is also not enough to meet their needs.

He has about 11 cattle and says the effects of the dry conditions are already visible.

Kumar says other farmers in the area also depend on the same river to provide water for their livestock.

He says prolonged dry conditions could have a serious impact on the community, as many families depend on livestock and sugarcane farming for their livelihoods.

Kumar is calling on the Government to assist farmers with borehole projects to provide a more reliable source of water.

He adds that he had planted cabbage and other vegetables, but the crops did not survive because of the current dry conditions.
