The Suva City Council is using sport as a platform to raise awareness on drug abuse, HIV and proper waste disposal.

SCC Chairman, Tevita Boseiwaqa highlighted this to fijivillage News during a volleyball tournament at Eagles Court in Raiwai, saying the aim is to discourage drug use, promote HIV awareness, and encourage responsible rubbish disposal—by delivering these messages to young people while they enjoy playing volleyball.

Boseiwaqa says they are working with non-governmental organisations to promote these messages between games and throughout the community.

He adds that more tournaments will be held, and the Council will work closely with NGOs to continue spreading the message.

Boseiwaqa says this is the awareness stage of the initiative, and more targeted strategies will be developed as it progresses.

He is calling on all stakeholders to come together and work in unity to address the social issues affecting our communities, particularly the youth.
