16-year-old Sione Rokobuli is ready to step into the boxing ring for the first time, bringing with him the confidence and guidance of a father who knows the sport.
The Year 11 student of Suva Grammar School was part of the school’s Under-17 Vodafone Deans Trophy-winning team, but this time, his challenge will be inside the boxing ring.
Rokobuli, who only started boxing last year will make his debut representing Castaway Boxing Club.
What makes the occasion even more significant is that his coach and father, Nemani Rokobuli, is a former amateur boxer and an Amateur Boxing Assistant National Coach.
With no previous bout under his belt, Rokobuli will be entering unfamiliar territory, but his early experience in the sport has given him a taste of the discipline and commitment required to compete.
His journey to the ring also carries strong family and island connections, with Rokobuli originally from Namuka-i-Lau and maternal links to Vitogo in Lautoka.
He will share the spotlight with fellow 16-year-old boxer Suruj Singh as the young fighters look to make their mark and gain valuable experience in the ring.
For Rokobuli, this is more than just another sporting challenge—it is the beginning of what could be an exciting boxing journey.
The two will be fighting at 10 this morning at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.
