Residents of Cunningham say they are living in fear as criminal activities continue to rise in the area, with a taxi driver becoming the latest victim after he escaped an attempted robbery and stabbing on Sunday.
A resident says the incident happened at around 8pm when two young men flagged down a taxi and pretended to ask about the fare, but one of them reached towards the driver's pocket in an attempt to steal from him.
The resident says when the driver grabbed the suspect to stop him, the man pulled out a knife and attempted to stab him, forcing him to let go.
The resident says the incident is another example of the growing crime issues affecting Cunningham.
The resident says one of the houses in the area has been robbed twice, with reports lodged to Police, but no arrests have been made.
He claims while Police do conduct patrols in the area, offenders often escape through multiple shortcuts within the squatter settlement.
The resident says snatch-and-run incidents have also become a concern, with many women being targeted for purse snatching.
He says the continued crime problems have left residents feeling unsafe in their own community and is calling on relevant authorities to take stronger action to address the issue.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe confirms that the Divisional Police Commander South will be looking into the concerns raised.
