Residents raise alarm over drug dealing in Lautoka informal settlements

Residents of informal settlements in Lautoka fear the growing presence of drug dealings is putting their safety at risk.

Speaking to fijivillage News, a concerned resident says cases of glue sniffing and drug dealing are on the rise in Tavakubu Subdivision, however, the sale of drugs within Lautoka City has reduced over time due to increased Police patrols.

He says there have been several occasions where people have come across used needles and syringes discarded in the area, raising fears for the safety of residents, particularly children.

Meanwhile, the resident had earlier told fijivillage News that some residents of Vunato Settlement claim drug dealing, brawls and other criminal activities are taking place in the Rifle Range informal settlement.

The resident says the Ministry has removed street dwellers from the city, describing it as a positive step as they are no longer exposed to danger.

The resident says while Police continue their efforts to track down drug dealers, it is equally important for every citizen to play their part by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities.

Questions have been sent to Police.
