Real Sociedad have claimed their fourth Copa del Rey title after defeating Atletico Madrid on penalties in a thrilling final.

Sociedad got off to a perfect start, scoring just 14 seconds into the match as Ander Barrenetxea headed in a cross from Goncalo Guedes, the fastest goal in Copa del Rey final history.

Atletico Madrid responded through Ademola Lookman, but Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s lead from the penalty spot just before halftime, giving them a 2-1 advantage at the break.

Atletico came back again in the second half, with Julian Alvarez scoring a superb equaliser to force the match into extra time.

With no goals scored in extra time, the final was decided by penalties, where Sociedad kept their composure.

Goalkeeper Unai Marrero made two key saves before Pablo Marin secured the victory with a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

The win marks Sociedad’s first major trophy since 2020.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid will now turn their focus to their Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal, with the first leg scheduled for April 30.
