There is good news for the people of Ovalau, with the Pacific Fishing Company Pte Limited (PAFCO) entering into a partnership with one of Spain's largest canned tuna exporters.
PAFCO General Manager Ashok Kumar made the announcement during the Fijian Media Association's Levuka Town Hall session after concerns were raised about the company's future.
An Ovalau resident said the island has two main sources of income—farming and employment at PAFCO.
He said the company is currently facing a shortage of tuna and claimed that some workers had been laid off.
The resident also said PAFCO management had briefed employees on the situation and asked what the government's plans were for the company.
While responding to the concern, Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga said PAFCO plays a vital role in the livelihoods of the people of Ovalau and is managed under the Ministry of Public Enterprises.
Turaga said discussions are ongoing and stressed that there are no plans for the company to close.
Clarifying speculation surrounding the company, PAFCO General Manager Ashok Kumar confirmed that Bumble Bee Foods is ending its partnership with PAFCO.
He said the process is now in its final week, but the company has secured a new partnership with one of Spain's largest canned tuna exporters.
Kumar said one of the main reasons for the tuna shortage is the high cost of fuel, which has limited the number of fishing vessels operating.
He says PAFCO's future remains secure, with tuna shipments expected from Kiribati and other suppliers.
Kumar also dismissed claims that workers had been laid off, saying the company continues to employ more than 400 people.
