As concerns mount over the rise of alleged illegal taxi operators in Labasa, the Land Transport Authority has warned that operating private vehicles as taxis without the required licence and permit is against the law.
The Authority says while there is a reported shortage of taxis in some areas during peak hours, particularly after 5pm, operating private vehicles without the required Public Service Vehicle licence and permit remains illegal.
It says monitoring and enforcement operations will continue in Labasa to ensure compliance with transport laws and promote the safety of passengers and licensed operators.
The Authority has reassured the public that appropriate action will be taken against anyone found operating illegally.
Meanwhile, Labasa Taxi Association Chairman Mahend Prasad told fijivillage News that the number of private vehicles operating as taxis has increased significantly.
Prasad alleges that one individual has around 30 private vehicles operating as illegal taxis, known as Pari taxis.
He says this is unfair to licensed PSV drivers who are working hard to earn an income and support their families.
Prasad also claims he has witnessed security guards allowing Pari taxis to drop off passengers at certain locations while restricting licensed taxi drivers.
