New FITI Gym opens in Labasa as Fiji battles with rising obesity rates
A quarter-million-dollar FITI Gym has officially opened at Vakamasisuasua , Naseakula in Labasa, marking a significant move towards promoting healthier lifestyles in the Northern Division.

While speaking during the opening ceremony, Minister for Health, Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu says the new gym represents a shift in approach from treating illness to preventing it.

The Minister also raised serious concerns about the country’s growing health challenges, revealing that more than two-thirds of adults are currently overweight or obese.

He says obesity rates stand at 68.2 percent, with nearly 40 percent of the population classified as obese.

He says women continue to record disproportionately higher rates compared to men.

He says by establishing this gym, they are moving beyond the four walls of the clinic and into the heart of preventive measures.

Dr Lalabalavu says that instead of waiting for patients to fall sick, the government is now focusing on providing tools that help people stay healthy and active.

Dr Lalabalavu stresses that the new gym reflects the belief that the best medicine is often a lifestyle of consistent and joyful movement.
