Nadi International Airport wins top green award for mangrove project

The Nadi International Airport has received the 2026 Green Airports Recognition Platinum Award for Fiji Airports Wailoaloa Mangrove Restoration Project.

The award was presented at the Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East conference in Bangkok, Thailand, with Fiji Airports CEO Mesake Nawari accepting the award on behalf of the organisation.

The award recognises outstanding climate change adaptation projects by airports across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions.

The Wailoaloa Mangrove Restoration Project was introduced to help protect the coastline surrounding Nadi International Airport while supporting environmental protection and climate resilience.

Nawari says the project shows how simple community action, like planting mangroves, can help protect the environment.

He says the award also belongs to everyone who supported the initiative, especially the children who took part in the planting activities.

The project brought together Fiji Airports staff, families, community members and partner organisations through volunteer-led mangrove planting efforts.
