Nadaro villager Taniela Colamoto has called for the complete removal of the immunity clause contained in Section 10 of the 2013 Constitution, saying some people who should be in prison are hiding behind the provision.

While making submissions to the Constitution Review Commission in Nadaro Village in Tailevu, Colamoto says the phrase "no one is above the law" is frequently used today, but claimed this was untrue and that people had been misled.

He claimed that former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum were above the law and questioned why people were being told otherwise.

Colamoto also said those involved in carrying out coups should be investigated.

He claimed that some people who should be in jail are hiding behind the immunity clause and that it should be removed.

He said that as long as the clause remains in place, there is a risk that another coup could occur.

Colamoto also claimed that the Great Council of Chiefs had remained silent on the issue because it had initially supported immunity provisions following the 1987 coup.

The villager said the integrity of law-making and law enforcement must apply equally to all citizens, regardless of their position or status.

He said if laws are in place to be enforced, then everyone should be required to follow and obey them.
