Midnight journey: Women of Naivucini reach Suva at 12am to sell produce for their families

At around midnight, Miliana Maramayawa arrives in Suva from Naivucini, ready to embrace the early hours of a new day as she prepares to sell her produce at the Suva Market.

Maramayawa says she comes to Suva every week to sell her produce and has gone through many hardships over the years.

She says during rainy weather, they often get wet and endure the cold, while at times there is not enough food for them.

However, she says they continue to persevere so their children can have a better education and future.

Maramayawa says the roads in Naitasiri are in poor condition and the bridge often floods during heavy rain, but that has never stopped them from travelling to Suva to sell their produce and earn a living.

She says her husband plants crops while she sells the produce such as lime, chillies and dalo at the market, adding that they survive through farming and cultivating the land.

She says patience always pays off, and before travelling to Suva, the family prays together so they can return home safely and in good health.
