Lionel Messi will have a stand named after him at Inter Miami’s new 26,700-capacity Nu Stadium.

The 38-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, joined the MLS club in 2023 after a trophy-laden career in Europe with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

He has since become the club’s record goalscorer with 82 goals and record assist provider with 53 for the Florida-based side.

Inter Miami says traditionally, tributes look to the past as they are built from nostalgia and from memory but this one is different as this one is born from the present.

They say that recognising someone is not always about closing a chapter, sometimes it is about realising you are witnessing something unique.

Inter Miami will play their first match at the stadium against Austin FC next weekend.

Last season, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner became the first MLS player to win consecutive Most Valuable Player awards and helped Inter Miami secure the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup, further elevating the club and the league.
