Argentina captain Lionel Messi has given the defending champions a 1-0 lead over Austria in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J clash.

Messi, who is now the World Cup's all-time leading scorer, broke the deadlock in the 38th minute.

Argentina came into the match after a convincing 3-0 win over Algeria in their opening match, while Austria defeated Jordan 3-1.

Argentina are ranked No. 1 in the latest FIFA World Rankings and are making their 19th FIFA World Cup appearance. The South Americans are three-time World Cup champions, having won the title in 1978, 1986 and 2022.

Austria are ranked 22nd in the FIFA World Rankings and are making their eighth FIFA World Cup appearance. Their best finish was fourth place at the 1934 FIFA World Cup.

Argentina will conclude their Group J campaign against Jordan on Sunday at 2pm, while Austria will face Algeria at the same time.

Meanwhile, in other matches, France face Iraq at 9am, Norway meet Senegal at midday, while Jordan take on Algeria at 3pm.
