Mataqali Nabukebuke seeks 14-day response on SPL1420 renewal
Mataqali Nabukebuke Spokesperson Petero Saunivalu

The mataqali Nabukebuke of Namosi Village is calling on the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo to clarify the government’s stance on the renewal of Special Prospecting Licence SPL1420 for the Namosi Joint Venture within 14 days.

Spokesperson Petero Saunivalu says the licence expired in 2023, and despite numerous meetings, no clear decision has been communicated by the government.

During a recent meeting in Namosi Village, members of the mataqali questioned Director of Mines, Doctor Apete Soro about how the company can still occupy the land after the licence expiry.

Doctor Soro explained that under the law, the licence remains valid during the renewal process, even if the original term has ended until a final decision is made to either renew or cancel it.

He confirmed that he will relay the mataqali’s 14-day request to Minister Vosarogo, but emphasised that the final decision lies with the Minister.

fijivillage News has sent questions to Minister Vosarogo and is waiting for a response.
