Makoi residents call for more Police patrols after attempted break-in

Residents along Vula Street in Makoi are concerned about their safety and are calling for increased police patrols after a man allegedly climbed onto the roof of a house and tried to find a way inside last night.

This follows another break-in in the neighbourhood last week.

A resident, says the incident happened sometime after 10pm while it was raining heavily.

She says she initially heard noise outside and went around the house switching on the lights in different rooms as she tried to work out where it was coming from.

She says when she and her grandmother went towards the front of their house and shop, some neighbourhood boys who were already outside alerted them that someone was at the house.

She says the man was on the roof and appeared to be trying to find a way into the house.

The resident says because of the heavy rain, they were unable to immediately check the roof to determine whether the man had left any tools or had attempted to remove anything.

She says the man later jumped from the roof, while some neighbourhood boys jumped over a neighbour's fence into their compound and managed to catch him.

Resident says no one in the household was injured as they were safely inside the house during the incident.

She says neighbours had already contacted Police, who arrived about five minutes later and took the man away.

She says when she later went to give her statement, the man was still at the Police station, adding that he appeared to have been drunk.

She says she has lived in the area for about 25 years and has never experienced anything like this before.

She says she also learnt that there had reportedly been another break-in near the roundabout recently, and is raising concerns as this would be the second such incident in the neighbourhood within a week.

She says residents are now worried about their safety and would like to see increased Police patrols in the area.

She says her family also operates a shop, which adds to their concerns, as they do not know what could have happened if the man had managed to enter the house.

We have contacted Police for further information.
