While questioning Minister for Health and Medical Services, Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu in Parliament, Maharaj asked whether the internship programme would be included in the review of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act of 2010.
Maharaj says students complete their education in December but have to wait until graduation in April, followed by another three to four months for employment before starting their internship.
Dr Lalabalavu says the Ministry is currently reviewing the Act through a dedicated taskforce, which is looking at areas including council representation, practitioner agreements, professional scopes and regulatory enforcement.
He says once the review is completed, it will be prepared as a Cabinet submission before following the normal process to be brought before Parliament.
