Macedru shines with new national record at Oceania Athletics Championships

Despite finishing fourth in the senior women's shot put at the Oceania Athletics Championship 2026 in Darwin, Australia, 17-year-old Maryann Macedru achieved another milestone by breaking her own national record with a throw of 14.76 metres.

The St Joseph's Secondary School student broke her previous record of 14.74 metres, which she set in 2025.

Macedru also participated in the senior women's discus during the championships, finishing tenth with a throw of 35.94 metres.

The 17-year-old has been consistent in the shot put arena, winning gold for St Joseph's in the Coca Cola Games.

Coming up today, Suva Grammar's Paula Vonolagi will compete in the U20 200 metres heats at 12.30pm. He will compete alongside teammates Emosi Laqere and Veremo Vasuitoga.

Desmond Reddy will run in the U20 men's 5,000 metres final at 1.15pm, Samantha Lutu will aim for another gold in the U20 women's triple jump at 2pm, Mosese Koroitunudau will participate in the U20 men's triple jump, while Ellijah Vakacegu will feature in the U16 400 metres final at 2.30pm.
