Tonga's newly elected PM Lord Fakafanua

Lord Fakafanua has been elected as Tonga’s new Prime Minister after securing the support of 16 out of 26 Members of Parliament in a secret ballot.

He defeated rival candidate and caretaker Prime Minister Aisake Eke in the vote.

This marks only the second time since Tonga’s democratic reforms in 2010 that a noble has been elected as Prime Minister.

Lord Fakafanua is the nephew of King Tupou VI and previously served as the Speaker of Parliament.

Following his election, Fakafanua says he feels he has earned the trust of Members of Parliament and stressed his commitment to uniting them to work towards a brighter future for all Tongans.

The Prime Minister also thanked the people of Tonga for the trust placed in him.
