People caught littering in the country will face a $200 fine from 1st September, following Cabinet’s approval of changes to the litter regulations.
This will increase from the current $40 penalty.
The government says the changes are aimed at strengthening action against littering across the country.
It says the changes will address problems with how litter laws are currently enforced and increase the outdated penalties.
The new regulations will also make it easier for Litter Prevention Officers, municipal councils and other authorised officers to enforce litter laws consistently.
Enforcement officers will receive training, while the process for issuing and paying fines will also be improved.
People will be able to pay their fines through digital payment options.
The government says it will increase public awareness about littering and the new penalties.
The new regulations will come into effect on 1st September 2026, following preparations by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and other enforcement agencies.
