Lil Nas X avoids trial with mental health diversion

American rapper Lil Nas X is a step closer to having his felony police battery case dismissed after a court approved his entry into a mental health diversion programme.

A judge ruled on Monday that the Grammy Award-winning artist, whose real name is Montero Hill, would be allowed to enter the programme.

Under the conditions set by the court, the case will be dismissed if Lil Nas X complies with a treatment plan following his diagnosis of bipolar disorder and abides by all laws over the next two years.

The musician is also prohibited from possessing weapons or engaging in any form of violence during the duration of the programme.

The Atlanta-born rapper was arrested last August in the Studio City area of Los Angeles, where police alleged they found the 26-year-old walking nude in the street shortly before 6am.
