Residents in Lautoka turned out in large numbers at the IYC Children’s Park to recycle bottles and cans, helping the environment following the launch of the Return and Earn Centre.
The Lautoka City Council has expressed its gratitude to residents for their support in keeping the environment clean.
Head of Service Shalend Singh says it is heartening to see street dwellers actively engaged in collecting recyclables from public spaces.
Singh adds that the initiative allows members of the public to earn some income while also helping to clean up the city.
He further says that the programme promotes resource recovery and helps preserve the environment.
Meanwhile, Return and Earn Fiji representative Dwain Qalovaki encourages families and communities in Lautoka to begin collecting plastic bottles and aluminium cans, which can be returned for five cents per container.
